Outside Informal Portraits
We capture images of people and things.  With people this process is 10% photography and 90% psychology.  With "things" it is all photography.  We are really, really good at psychology and even better at photography image capture!  Our goal from the beginning is to satisfy the client and if we cannot, we will tell that we can not right up front.  The only surprise is how good the work turns out everytime.

You Can't Capture What You Can't See

So, who are you and how did you come to be?

This is the "how did you come to be" part.  The company was started in Highland Park by Michael Metzger in his kitchen and basement in 1973.  It was known a Printmakers but everyone kept making the checks out to Michael Metzger, so 8 months later he change the name to Michael Metzger & Staff, Inc.  The goal was to make a living as a commmerical photographer whatever that might means to different people.  To Michael it meant, "take images and make them into photographs and sell them at a profit".  He had already built a darkroom in the basement of the home and had been "experimenting" with larger format cameras.  Prior to the formation of the company, he had used a box camera since he was 6 yrs old and then graduated to a "real" 35mm camera in 1962 when his dad gave him and Argus C3, using Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Plus X and Tri X.  Michael's earlier photo involvement will be cover elsewhere for those interested.  For now, we will stick to the company known as Michael Metzger & Staff. Inc. Michael has taken the company through many changes.  Over the years he has had as many as 8 full time employees and 6 part timers, dowm to the present one man operation.  Below lies the results of all those years of training and exploring the world and its people.  Total time with mom and kids: one hour and 40 minutes, we had never met and only spoke on the phone.  The resulting album was met as a surprise for her husband.  He liked it so much, they all (now three kids) came back two years later for another session.

My Daughter's  Testimonial:

Physicist turn professional photographer in 1973.  Specializing in informal/on location portraits of people of all ages and types.  On-site printing.  Has not shot film in over 7 years.  Completely computer-network-Photoshop literate.  Builds own computers(12) and servers(23).  Travelled extensively for various tour agencies and airlines(Australia, New Zealand, China, South America, Europe, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, 20+ islands in Caribbean and South Africa.  Problem solver when it comes to setups, complicated people interactions and quirks, equipment usage and performance, local tribal negotiations and creative usage of dull locations.

Michael's strengths’ lay in his people skills, easy going attitude,  ability to relax and allow clients to have fun even though they are being photographed which most of us dislike immensely.

Michael's vast worldwide travel experience and technical knowledge allows him the ability to solve your photographic needs and then some.

His mantra is "You can't photograph what you can't see".  What is meant by this is, you must train yourself to see the real world and all of those who are participants not just that which is comfortable and/or familiar to your eyes.  This is one of his biggest strengths and he brings it to "the table" with each and every job, no matter how big or small.

Lastly, to know Michael is to have met a truly wonderful and talented human being.  How do I know all of this, I'm his daughter, Lauren.
